The Power of a Phone Call

What strikes me today is the power of phone call to change the course of a morning, a relationship, a family . . . of a life.

Savor every moment of every day and be brave.

Always do the right thing.

My 9 Year Old is Digitally Distinct. Are You?

My daughter is nine years old. She owns her own domain, rocks her Google Rank and we track her online identity with Google Alerts.

She has a blog called Raising Tarah that she lets me share with her. Her page is the front page because she writes much more than I do. One of her posts inspired a highly respected leadership blogger Mary Jo Asmus to write Leadership Lessons From Children

She is working on her writing, "if you want your posts to be linked to, you have to write more details," sharing her space with guest authors, and is not afraid to share her feeling about others. She experiments with video, T-Rex Tango, and she shares her creative side via The Artist Within.

She knows that if one source says something she doesn't think is right she looks further. Just because something is in writing doesn't make it true and if you write something bad about someone you can hurt their feelings.

She is not online without our permission, she does not have a Facebook page or a Twitter account and is just beginning to e-mail. Her texting is limited to family members.

My daughter is interested and she is engaged.  Are you?

Recruiters Rock!

Recruiters are an engaging, energetic, jump-in-the-air-and-scream bunch of professionals.

If you are not connected to a good recruiter, you are missing out. I talk to recruiters, I subscribe to recruiter blogs, I have recruiters in my LinkedIn network, and I follow recruiters on Twitter.

Recruiters have my attention. I am flying right outside their orbit and I am close enough to feel their vibe.

The best recruiters are always learning. They are current. They utilize technology to its fullest. They bring passion to what they do. They are authentic, energetic, and collaborative. They bring out the best in others and their word is their bond.

There are many ways HR professionals can benefit from a recruiter connection and, that aside, the top reason reason why I connect with recruiters is because they give me a charge. They are extroversion in action, positive, and continually in the game. Their ideas make me think and their initiatives expand my comfort zone. They make me laugh.

Need a lift? Connect with a recruiter and prepare to be amazed.

A Reader Asks About Autoresponders and Employee Engagement

An HR Manager from Australia is looking to revolutionise his onboarding program and was wondering if anyone had experiences to share about the use of autoresponders and employee engagement. He writes:

One tool I have played with in a marketing sense is the "autoresponder" -  programmed messages to promote your product. I was then wondering if anyone had used these for regular staff updates.

As you have taken questions in the past I thought I would throw it to your and your readers to see if anyone has tried them with any success. To me they would save time, direct people to relevant reading during their probation and, if done well, assist (not solve) the engagement factor.

I personally have not had any experience with this but wonder about its effectiveness after the novelty runs out. Maybe I am feeling this way because it seems that every night when I get home now I have an automated political announcement or two, or five on my phone and I delete them before they finish their first 5 words.

So readers, what say you to Bill from Australia?
