A Reader Asks About Autoresponders and Employee Engagement

An HR Manager from Australia is looking to revolutionise his onboarding program and was wondering if anyone had experiences to share about the use of autoresponders and employee engagement. He writes:

One tool I have played with in a marketing sense is the "autoresponder" -  programmed messages to promote your product. I was then wondering if anyone had used these for regular staff updates.

As you have taken questions in the past I thought I would throw it to your and your readers to see if anyone has tried them with any success. To me they would save time, direct people to relevant reading during their probation and, if done well, assist (not solve) the engagement factor.

I personally have not had any experience with this but wonder about its effectiveness after the novelty runs out. Maybe I am feeling this way because it seems that every night when I get home now I have an automated political announcement or two, or five on my phone and I delete them before they finish their first 5 words.

So readers, what say you to Bill from Australia?

Hi Bill,

Great to read your post asking about autoresponders, I undersatand what you mean, we are delieting emails much faster, even though some of them may contain valuable information.

I have seen some automated email, but they have been more for the purpose of providing information. Depending on how big is the organisation a practice has been to provide bite size chunks of information, some of this information could be found in the intranet.

Onboarding is a term that is used for many purposes, from providing a desk, mobile and a computer, to complete coaching programs to help new hires to build credibility and create a success track in his/her first 90 days.

Please feel free to contact me to understand your onboarding program and the intention of the autoresponders, I may be able to assist you better.

Bill,

I work for a college and most of our HR communication is automated (or in the process of being updated). From the hire, to the new staff orientation, to evaluations, benefits, etc - everything is automated for information, meetings and requirements.

I don't know if this is exactly what you are asking but we take the rote information - the stuff that we send time and time again into a work flow. Our software is pretty custom to higher education but I am certain that business would have similar programs available.

If you would like more info, you are welcome to contact me at maven@thehrmaven.com.

Hello Juan, Lisa and Maven

Thanks for your responses I'll be in touch. I understand that on-boarding is a huge area for development, this is only one possible piece of the pie. But in this day and age we need to be on the forefront of technology and sometimes a tool designed for one thing can work wonderfully well for something else!

Thanks Lisa for posting the question. Very much appreciated.

Bill
